Just for parents - Little Hearts/Gentle Parenting is about guiding instead of controlling and connecting instead of punishing. The site is full of great ideas that are appropriate. There are many links to other resources for parents, also.
Books. Books! Books!! I love books. As a retired primary school teacher who has taught hundreds of kids to read - my goal was to teach my students the love of reading. Check out books from your local library. Buy books for gifts.
There are many places to purchase great books. One of my favorites is USBorne Books & More. You can see their catalog and order from Up and Away with Books. They have high-quality books that entertain and teach kids about the world around them. Another good place is Scholastic Books. Many schools have book fairs once in the fall and again in the spring.
I remember one of my second-grade students who was struggling with his reading. I advised his parents to let him reading anything. They bought him a comic book. Then another one. By the end of the school year, he was on grade level.
Read. Read! Read!! Young children need to have someone read to them starting as young as toddlers. Some believe that reading can have positive effects on babies still in the womb. Studies have proven that kids who have been read to on a consistent basis learn to read faster and sooner than those who have not.
Have fun reading to your kids! But be forewarned! It is addicting!
